We had come to Pune to visit a two holy spiritual sites that we were yearning to see. One was the home where the great saint Meher Baba
grew up. Meher Baba lived from 1894-1969 and was an avatar, meaning a
direct incarnation of God. He was in silence for the last 44 years of
his life and had many devoted followers throughout the world. His
house was small and full of mementos from him – locks of his hair,
favorite clothes, toothbrush, chair, and wonderful photos. We were the
only ones there, so we were able to take our time and have a nice long
stay.

From there we walked about 15 minutes on a very busy
street to the other holy and famous site of the tomb of Hazrat Babajan
– an Indian woman who is regarded as one of the 5 Perfected Masters and
is very highly revered in India. She lived next to a very large tree
on a busy street and if we saw her in Santa Barbara, we'd just dismiss
her as another wacky homeless person. Her tomb was in marble inside of
a street side shrine right on the street. There was a man there who
would lay the offerings of flowers that people brought on top of her
tomb and tend to it by keeping the covers smooth and picking up stray
flowers. We gave him an offering of money and he blessed us by
bopping us with a wand of peacock feathers. We stayed in the shrine
and both fell into a deep meditation. You could palpably feel the
energy from this woman's presence, even though she had left her body.
It was quite extraordinary.
