SWAN LAKE
Matthew Bourne's version of Swan
Lake came to Sydney for a limited engagement at the Capitol
Theatre. It was one of the most beautiful and moving productions
we have ever seen. The original story has the prince falling in
love with a lovely swan played by a gorgeous ballerina. This
version is set to contemporary times and has the prince falling in love
with a swan played by a male dancer. All of the swans were played
by males and they were each extraordinary dancers. When you see
the swans played by men, it suddenly makes so much more sense than the
delicate little ballerinas you usually see in the ballet. Swans
are strong and fierce, and you really feel that in this. The
costumes were minimal and powerful and the story was dynamic and
extraordinary. The sad and tragic ending brought us both to tears.
Here
are some photos of the dancers in action. We couldn't take these
during the performance so we bought a program and shot them off of that.
