Dunedin Architecture
Dunedin is reminiscent of an Irish town, and had some wonderful
architecture we enjoyed. Here is the cathedral in the center of
the square. When we peeked inside, a service was in progress -
all spoken in Maori by the presiding priest.
Dunedin is a major college town, with New Zealand's oldest university,
as well as a couple other technical schools. The student
population is over 25,000 - but they were all on their summer Christmas
break, so the city felt like a ghost town.
Another great church....
This was the Law Court, built in 1895...
And of course, one of our favorite buildings was the Dunedin train station...
The inside of the train station was magnificent - wonderful tile work on the walls and ceiling friezes...
and intricate mosaic designs on the floors. Pause a moment on
this next picture to see several of the patterns in the floor...
One other fun feature of Dunedin was Baldwin Street - which is in the
Guinness Book of Records as the steepest street in the world.
Naturally we walked (climbed!) up and down it...
